An architectural masterpiece

When Hans J. Wegner unveiled the design of the CH07 Shell Chair in 1963, many critics loved the avant-garde look, but the general public was reluctant to accept its distinctive expression. The conflicting reviews in the 1960s coupled with the less developed manufacturing techniques of the time, led to very limited production. When Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the Shell Chair in 1998, it gained wide public admiration almost immediately thanks to the interest of a new generation.

The floating lightness of the design is achieved through the wing-shaped seat and curved back supported by a frame with three arched legs. The chair's signature seat and back are crafted from padded, pressed veneer, which cradles the user with generous comfort. The laminated legs of the chair are made up of several layers of veneer and the two front legs are made up of a single element, resulting in a unique and stable shape. The Shell Chair is a clear manifestation of Wegner's belief that a chair should always be comfortable and beautiful from all sides and from all angles.
