From design to product
Designed in 1947 by Marco Zanuso, the great Milanese designer, one of the first to inaugurate the phenomenon of Italian “good design”. In fact, he warned at the end of the 1940s that the functionalist theories according to which the shape of products is subordinate to their function had to give way to a new concept of design based on the concept of balance between form and function.
In the Maggiolina project, Zanuso abandoned the traditional concept of the armchair with the padded structure and the use of artisan techniques, to experiment with a new construction system designed for industrial mass production.
The designer's research began with the evolution of the modern method, with the functional breakdown of the elements: curved and painted metal tube, a semi-rigid shell and two padded cushions.
When Zanotta started the re-edition of Maggiolina in 1972, it did so starting from the original version revised by the same author.
